Location: Press Briefing Room, Room S-237, UNHQ, New York and online

Ahead of the UN 2023 Water Conference, the Global Commission on the Economics of Water published “Turning the Tide: A Call to Collective Action”, a report which alerts the world to a growing global water crisis and lays out actions that can and must be taken urgently and collectively to arrest it. Failing which, they highlight, the world will also fail on climate action and on all the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The world can only get out of this impasse by moving collectively and urgently in the current decade: through actions that are bolder, and more integrated and networked at national,

regional, and global levels. The Commission’s Call to Collective Action lays out a seven- point agenda to achieve this.

At this press conference, the four co-chairs of the Commission will present the key findings of the group and respond to journalists’ questions.

Speakers:

  • Mariana Mazzucato, Professor at University College London & Founding Director of the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose
  • Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General, World Trade Organization
  • Johan Rockström, Director, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK)
  • Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for Social Policies, Government of Singapore

The press conference will be live-streamed on UN Web TV.
